Art on the underground

We launched a new commission by US photographer Trevor Paglen for TfL’s public art programme Art on the Underground.

Addressing issues around surveillance and privacy, Paglen’s platform-length photographic installation depicted the US base at Menwith Hill, North Yorkshire.

We established clear messaging and lines of communication to handle difficult enquires around a potentially contentious public artwork. The result was excellent coverage across arts and current affairs media with critical engagement with the art and the issues it explored.

Coverage included interviews with Radio 3 Free Thinking a large profile feature in the Independent on Sunday, a picture news stories in the Guardian and reviews in The Economist, ArtInfo, BJP and ICON.

They were thoughtful, thorough and ambitious which meant that the media the project got was exactly what we wanted - sensitive, intelligent and high-profile.
