National Apprenticeship Week - interview with Four apprentices

This week is National Apprenticeship Week and to celebrate we asked our apprentices to tell us about their experience at Four.

Four is committed to encouraging staff with their continued personal development and, as part of this, we have employed apprentices for a number of years. We support them with their internal and external learning. As well as employing apprentices, last year Four converted an employee into an apprentice for the first time.

Four fully understands the university route isn’t viable for everyone and is keen to have skills learned on the job recognised as a formal accreditation.

The scheme has been beneficial both to Four and all of the staff members involved, and we hope to continue for years to come.

Read on to find out what our apprentices had to say.

- Marcia La-Rose, Head of HR

"I am a year into my apprenticeship and I already have one qualification. I have six months before I can be fully qualified in my position at Four. Apprenticeships are a great way of learning on the job. I feel as though I have learned a lot about my role and how I can put certain knowledge into practice." - Emily Brown

"Being an apprentice has helped me gain experience and qualifications within accountancy. Before being an apprentice I completed my AAT level 2 at college and I found it harder to understand the reason behind doing certain things due to not being able to put the work into practice. My apprenticeship has helped me gain a better understanding of the way things work which then benefits me when I revise and sit exams as I have real life experience that I can apply to my studies." - Alysia Johnson-Gray

"Being an apprentice has mostly just been about learning from first-hand experience, whether it be how to cope with pressure or how to manage an unpredictable workload at times. Notably for myself I’ve learned not to needlessly get behind on studies otherwise you’ll find yourself having to do 5 exams in 5 months! Being new to working life as a whole it’s been great to have so many positive people around. It’s also helped my confidence, being in a role where I’m constantly needing to communicate with people all over the business. I’ve met a lot of interesting people." - Alex Leonard
