Four Colman Getty lit up Blackpool last weekend with the launch of the first LightPool Festival, part of a programme to modernise Blackpool Illuminations and to reinvigorate the world-famous seaside resort with art - thanks to support from Arts Council England and Coastal Communities Fund.
Over the six days Blackpool town centre was transformed with thought-provoking installations and spectacular performances by over 30 artists. They included a classic work of light art by Yoko Ono and Art Is Your Human Right, a new commission by Bob and Roberta Smith installed on buildings around the town centre.
Based around a 4km walking route, the festival is designed to attract new visitors to Blackpool on this key holiday weekend while increasing their engagement with the town centre.
The Observer reported that “The greatest light show on earth heralds Blackpool’s rebirth” while the event has been recommended in The Guardian, The Sun, Mail Online and The Sunday Times.
