Jerwood/FVU Awards 2018

Four Culture has been working on the fifth edition of the Jerwood/FVU Awards which opened at the Jerwood Space on 6 April. Films from Maeve Brennan and Imran Perretta premiered, responding to the theme of ‘Unintended Consequences’. Maeve Brennan’s Listening in the Dark gathers a series of subtle but penetrating soundings of human beings’ impact on the natural environment. A creature that has often fallen beneath our radar is the bat. Undisturbed, and largely unchanged, for millions of years, its nocturnal rhythms are being increasingly interrupted by the presence of wind turbines. Imran Perretta’s film 15 days examines how the face of the refugee has been dehumanised, often anonymised, and frequently demonised. The work is inspired by the time that Imran spent in Calais and Dunkirk with former inhabitants of the refugee camp that became known as the Jungle, living rough in the surrounding woodland. Using cutting edge animation techniques and a poignant monologue in Pashtun, Perretta’s film captures the intense emotions of living on the edge and brings them to the forefront of our minds.

‘Unintended Consequences’ has received an enthusiastic critical response, being pick of the week for Art Review and listed as a top exhibition on The Londonist, This is Tomorrow, Art Rabbit, A-N and Something Curated. Maeve was interviewed for London Live and featured in the Evening Standard and Frieze. Interviews with both artists are due in Floorr and After Nyne.
