Preparations for the opening of the new Foyles at 107 Charing Cross Road in early June are moving on apace. We’ve been lucky enough to have a glimpse inside the new shop and it is looking magnificent. While we’ll miss the old building, the former Central St Martins has been transformed into a wonderful space, full of light and, of course, books.
Foyles is celebrating with a Grand Opening Festival beginning on Wednesday 11 June. The new shop will be officially opened by double Man Booker winner, Hilary Mantel on Friday 13 June. Award-winning crime novelistVal McDermid, best-selling novelist Sebastian Faulks, novelist and screenwriter Anthony Horowitz, children’s writer Michael Rosen and Twitter co-founder Biz Stone are amongst the authors appearing at the Festival.
A wonderful array of authors and artists will open each new department: Simon Armitage, Poetry; Mary Beard, History and Politics; Malorie Blackman, Children’s and YA; Jarvis Cocker, Music; PD James, Crime Fiction; Mark Kermode, Film and Theatre; Henry Marsh, Medical; Yotam Ottolenghi, Cookery; Michael Palin, Travel; Grayson Perry, Art; Biz Stone, Business; Sarah Waters, Fiction. Many will mark the occasion by unveiling a table of their top ten books from the department, personally recommended for Foyles customers to discover.
The line-up announcement caused great excitement and tickets have been selling very fast since going on sale in early May. The Festival is on until Saturday 5 July, so if you do get a chance, do pop down to 107 Charing Cross Road.
