Four Health NHS Insights: The Health Service in 2018

We are delighted to present The Health Service in 2018, our new guide to the structure of the NHS.

After nearly a decade of austerity funding, the financial, clinical and demographic challenges facing the NHS are beginning to have an impact on patients as another winter crisis begins to bite. There is no doubt that 2018 promises to be one of the most challenging in the history of the service – which makes impactful engagement much more difficult.

In line with the Five Year Forward View, NHS England is quickly adopting a more regional approach to the commissioning and delivery of services in an attempt to tackle these issues, moving away from the hyper-local system set up by Andrew Lansley’s Health and Social Care Act 2012. Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships (STPs), Accountable Care Organisations (ACOs) and the broader NHS Transformation agenda are proving controversial, but NHS England is convinced that it’s the only way to keep the health service show on the road.

The structure of the NHS – and where the real power lies – has changed substantially and it is crucial for companies to be well informed about how the health service works in practice. To help you keep pace with these changes, The Health Service in 2018 is your new at-a-glance guide to the NHS landscape. It shows you who the key decision makers are, where the budget holders reside and where industry is playing a role. We hope you and your colleagues will find this useful as you kick-off your 2018 engagement plans.
